Volvo Car USA Headquarters Welcomes Alex’s Cafe
Volvo Car USA has teamed up with Bergen Community College to give students hands-on experience in culinary arts, business management, and hospitality services — all while contributing to a worthy cause. Soon, Bergen students will have a chance to operate Alex’s Cafe, which benefits children’s cancer research, while gaining experience in a learning kitchen at Volvo Cars’ Americas Headquarters, located in Mahwah, New Jersey.
Empowering students to get ahead in their careers
By partnering with Bergen Community College, Volvo is giving students their first taste of life in a commercial kitchen. Culinary scholars staffing Alex’s Cafe will have the chance to practice menu and kitchen management, familiarize themselves with restaurant equipment, develop new recipes, and provide customer service.
Alex’s Cafe will serve everything from lunch favorites, like cheeseburgers, fries, and handmade pizzas, to house-made juice and fresh-baked cookies. The in-house eatery will also feature a smoothie bar, specialty sandwiches, take-home dinners for four, and Alex’s signature lemonade.
Anders Gustafsson, the CEO and president of Volvo Car USA, stated that the automaker is excited to bring Alex’s Cafe to the brand’s headquarters. “We believe our people will learn as much from the students as we hope they’ll learn from this experience,” he concluded.
Bergen Community College president Eric M. Friedman was equally enthusiastic about joining forces. “As part of this collaborative partnership, Bergen students have the opportunity to work with one of the world’s most recognizable brands and gain practical experience.” He believes that this collaboration is in line with the school’s dedication to preparing students for entering the workforce and embarking on successful careers.
And since the hospitality industry is a vital part of New Jersey’s local economy, this opportunity will give Bergen students an edge when they enter the competitive job market.
Raising funds for a good cause
You might be wondering about the namesake of Alex’s Cafe. The Volvo headquarters’ newest dining establishment is a part of the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, named in honor of Alexandra “Alex” Scott. When she was four years old and battling cancer, Alex started a lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Although the disease would take her life four years later, she managed to raise over $1 million with the help of generous donors and corporate sponsors like Volvo.
Today, the foundation that bears her name continues to carry out her vision and has become one of North America’s top funders of childhood cancer research. Since the charity was founded in 2005, ALSF has raised over $200 million for over 1,000 scientific research studies, while also providing aid to families impacted by the disease. All sales from Alex’s Cafe will benefit the foundation and its mission, so Volvo employees in Mahwah can feel good about every dollar they spend on snacks and drinks.
With the purchase of every Volvo in America, a portion of the proceeds goes towards ALSF. So when you buy a Volvo, you get more than a stylish, high-tech, expertly engineered vehicle — you can feel good about supporting life-saving medical research and giving back to families in need.
