Vehicle Profile: 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster
The 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster is the open-top variant of the 718 Cayman, a mid-engine sports car that’s delightful to drive anywhere you’re required to make use of the steering wheel. It’s the most affordable model in the Porsche lineup with the exception of the Macan SUV, and it’s a great entry point for those seeking to experience what the brand has to offer. For pure driving pleasure, it’s hard to beat a Boxster.
The 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster is designed to seamlessly blend comfort, style and performance. Take, for instance, the new sport steering wheel. Derived from the 918 Spyder supercar, it maximizes comfort and grip while rounding out the cockpit’s luxurious, yet motorsport-inspired look. The three-tier instrumentation, with a central tachometer flanked by a 4.6-inch color screen, contributes to the interior’s modern look while conveniently and clearly conveying the most important driving information. When the fabric top is closed, the 718 Boxster’s silhouette is sleek, with large wheel arches and muscular haunches emphasizing its mid-engine layout. The top can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 31 mph, the process taking only nine seconds. And at 75 mph, the Boxster’s understated yet refined exterior style takes on a more serious look as the rear wing automatically extends to better glue the car to the road.
Engine specs and performance
The 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The 718 Boxster S adds half a liter of displacement as well as 50 hp and 29 lb-ft of torque. Both engines rev up to 7,500 rpm and have cylinders arranged in a “boxer” configuration — flat and opposed to each other. This allows the engine to sit lower in the car, reducing the center of gravity, improving handling and decreasing vibrations. Additionally, unique to the 718 in the Porsche lineup, the engine is located between the driver and the rear axle. This mid-engine placement, combined with rear-wheel drive, is the preferred configuration in motorsports because of the superior handling and agility that comes with it, and this translates to a great driving feel in the Boxster. The only downside is that because of the enhanced sharpness of the steering, the car can feel nervous and twitchy to rookie drivers. Fortunately, thanks to the clever adaptive suspension, the 718 Boxster never truly allows you to go beyond the limits of its capabilities, ensuring that you can feel like a hero whenever corners are involved.
Luxury features and amenities
By looking at its interior, you wouldn’t be able to tell that the 718 Boxster is one of the most inexpensive vehicles you can buy from Porsche. Beautifully crafted leather is everywhere, from the ventilated and heated front seats to the dashboard and perfectly placed shift knob. It doesn’t have to be leather, though. Through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, you can customize your own Boxster in just about every way. Do you want Alcantara®, aluminum, mahogany or carbon in a variety of different colors? You can have them and more. You can also choose between two high-end surround sound systems, one featuring 10 speakers by BOSE® and the other 12 speakers by Burmester®. Designed specifically for the Boxster, they deliver rich, natural and even sound even with the top down.
The 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster might not be as fast as the better-known Porsche 911, but its lightweight chassis and mid-engine configuration arguably make it more fun behind the wheel. And with the top down, it’s pure enjoyment.
