Don't Miss These 5 Summer Blockbusters Coming to Theaters

The summer blockbuster is an American staple that began with “Jaws” in 1975 and has only gotten bigger over the past several decades. Today, the summer cinematic slate is filled with films that will likely rake in big bucks and capture imaginations all over the globe. The following are just some of the biggest movies on the docket this summer.

“Toy Story 4” (NR)

One of the most beloved franchises in cinema continues on with “Toy Story 4,” which hits theaters on June 21. The fourth entry in the series sees a new friend named Forky join Woody, Buzz and the returning cast of lovable characters for a road trip adventure. In addition to Tony Hale, who voices Forky, “Toy Story 4” adds the talents of Keegan-Michael Key, Keanu Reeves and Academy Award winner Jordan Peele.

“Child’s Play” (NR)

A reboot of the “Child’s Play” horror franchise arrives in theaters on June 21, possibly purposely sharing the same release date as “Toy Story 4.” Chucky, the toy in this particular story, is anything but friendly: In the original franchise, the red-haired Good Guy doll was possessed by the vengeful spirit of a serial killer. While little is known about the plot of the reboot — or, for that matter, the voice that will take up the mantle of Chucky from Brad Dourif — it will star Aubrey Plaza and Bryan Tyree Henry.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” (NR)

Once you’ve begun to recover from the fallout of “Avengers: Endgame,” you will be plunged headlong back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Opening July 5, the second entry in the Marvel-helmed Spider-Man reboot sends Peter Parker to Europe for a school trip. It isn’t long before trouble finds him in the form of Mysterio, a theatrical supervillain portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal. The film is also said to mark Stan Lee’s final posthumous MCU cameo, so you may do well to have tissues handy.

“The Lion King” (NR)

The CGI reimagining of the 1994 Disney classic “The Lion King” boasts incredible graphics and an unbelievable voice cast. Major names taking part in the film, which drops on July 19, include Donald Glover, Beyonce, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keegan-Michael Key, John Oliver and Eric Andre. Perhaps the most welcome member of the “Lion King” cast is James Earl Jones, who returns once more to reprise his role as the voice of Mufasa.

“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” (NR)

The first spin-off of the “Fast & Furious” franchise focuses on the characters of Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, respectively portrayed by heavy-hitters Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham. “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” arriving in theaters on Aug. 2, continues the series’ delirious descent into over-the-top situations by pitting the titular duo against a cyber-genetically enhanced supervillain portrayed by People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2018, Idris Elba.

Whether it’s over-the-top action, a moving retelling of a classic tale or a good old-fashioned scary movie, there’s something for every moviegoer this summer blockbuster season. Check your local listings and get your popcorn ready.
