Vehicle Details: 2019 Subaru BRZ Performance
The Subaru BRZ is one of few two-door sport coupes you can buy that starts well under $30,000 and comes with rear-wheel drive. That’s one of the reasons it’s among the most popular cars for budget-conscious driving enthusiasts. Another reason is that it’s just plain good.
One of the 2019 Subaru BRZ’s most defining characteristics is its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder BOXER® engine. The name comes from its horizontally-opposed configuration (also known as “flat”) that helps reduce the center of gravity and vibrations compared to traditional inline and V engines. Inside the BRZ, it produces 205 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. You’ll note that this is over 100 horsepower per liter of displacement, something that’s typically difficult to achieve without turbocharging, which the BOXER® engine manages with direct- and port-injection technology. Two transmissions are offered: one a six-speed close-ratio manual and the other a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. Whichever you choose, you can count on exceptional responsiveness each time you climb the 7,400-rpm curve thanks to the Dual Active Valve Control System.
Handling and agility
As mentioned, the 2019 Subaru BRZ’s BOXER® engine contributes to a lower center of gravity, which is like the holy grail of handling. With a lower center of gravity comes lower body roll and more responsive cornering, though the BRZ doesn’t rely only on the engine’s layout to help with that. The independent, sport-tuned MacPherson strut front suspension works in tandem with the independent double wishbone rear suspension to provide a nice balance of comfort and compliance. You can guide your way more decisively through corners thanks to the aggressive 13.1:1 steering ratio that ensures your inputs are instantly translated to the wheels. When you finally come out of that corner and you’re ready to step on the throttle again, the Torsen® limited-slip differential ensures the grip comes back to you in a predictable and progressive manner.
Available Performance Package
For even better lap times, you can equip the 2019 Subaru BRZ with an optional Performance Package. It comes with large Brembo® brakes for improved stopping power that will last over many laps, as well as a SACHS® performance suspension system with sport-tuned dampers, enhancing responsiveness, stability and even ride quality. Finally, the Performance Package also comes with exclusive 17-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels. They don’t improve performance, but they do make you look good.
If you’re just discovering your passion for driving, the 2019 Subaru BRZ is an excellent car to help you develop your skills. And even if you don’t fancy yourself a driving enthusiast, a quick test drive around winding backroads near your local dealership may change your mind.
