Creative Ways to Celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month
June 1 officially marks the start of Pride Month, a time when individuals in the LGBTQ community get together and celebrate their authentic selves. Last year, most Pride events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While there may be some outdoor events occurring this year as vaccines are given across the country, you can still celebrate creatively at home if you’d prefer to do so — whether you’re a part of the LGBTQ community or just an ally.
Buy LGBTQ-created items
Whether you want to spruce up your home with some thoughtful paintings or dive into a new novel, there are plenty of queer creators to support. Head to a site like Etsy to see homemade items that can serve as new home décor or unique gifts for loved ones. Unfortunately, due to certain laws or businesses that discriminate against LGBTQ individuals, it can be hard for some people to make a living in a typical office setting. As a result, many try their hand at crafts and art to sell online for extra income. So not only will you be buying some really cool stuff, you’ll be supporting people who need it.
Have a movie night
If you want to learn more about LGBTQ history, support creators, or just watch films that feature queer individuals, try setting up a Pride Movie Night. You can watch alone, with those you live with, or virtually with friends across the country. Just a few great options to watch include “Paris is Burning,” “But I’m a Cheerleader,” “Moonlight,” and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.” If you’d rather watch some television, try the rebooted “One Day at a Time” for some good family laughs or you can marathon a ton of older episodes of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” to see how the show has changed over the years.
Throw a dance party
One of the key elements of celebrating Pride, either at a festival or at nightclubs, is the booming music that travels through the air. You can have your own dance party at home with creative lighting, decorations, and a killer playlist. Spotify already has pre-made Pride and queer playlists that you can use or draw inspiration from. Deck out your living room or even a patio with string lights, streamers, and be sure to clear out enough space to actually dance. Jazz things up even more with themed drinks and snacks so you can stay energized and dance the night away.
Educate yourself and take action
Even within the LGBTQ community, there’s still a lack of knowledge about historical events and current discriminatory legislation in the U.S. Learn more about what individuals are facing and what you can do to help. Whether it’s donating a small amount to a cause that directly assists members of the queer community or writing a letter to a senator, anything can help — no matter how insignificant it may seem to you. Keep tabs on anti-LGBTQ legislation here or head here to donate.
Pride Month may still look a bit different this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. These are just a handful of ways you can celebrate!
